Maddie Turlington Leads Women’s Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Hampton
October 09, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took on conference foe Hampton on Saturday night under the lights at Greene-Harbison Stadium. The Runnin' Bulldogs came out on top with a 1-0 victory.
"That was a hard-fought physical match that we had to grind out for the win," said head coach Mike Varga. "Katelyn was clean with every ball in goal. Our team defending was good. We created a couple good chances early that would have changed the game if we would have finished but that's soccer. It took an incredible finish from Maddie to finally get us out in front and we were able to keep another clean sheet."
Maddie Turlington led the Red and Black to a triumphant win, as she scored the eventual game winner in the 65th minute of match play. Turlington singlehandedly ran the ball straight up the field and found the back of the net, breaking through the pirate's defense.
20 shots were taken throughout the night, which were split evenly between the Pirates and the Runnin' Bulldogs. Hampton had six corner kick opportunities throughout the game, Gardner-Webb had just one less. Both teams fouled nine times during match play.
Goalkeeper Katelyn Kellogg helped to secure the shutout win for GWU, spending the full 90 minutes between the posts she had eight saves throughout the game.
The 'Dogs will be back in action on Wednesday, October 13, as they travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to take on Campbell University. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm.
