Box Score KNOXVILLE, TN. – Gardner-Webb opened its 2021 spring season Sunday afternoon and dropped a 6-0 decision at SEC member Tennessee.
Despite Goalkeepers
Abby Atchley (two saves) and
Paula Suarez Is (three saves) having a combined total of five saves in the match, it was not enough to overcome the 11 shots on goal that Tennessee had in the game.
In a rough first ten minutes of match play GWU was given fouls to three different players,
Aubrie Jackson,
Maddie Turlington, and
Alisha Holcombe. Shortly after, the Vol's scored their first two goals of the game to take the lead.
"(It was) not quite the first 10 minutes we had hoped for." Head Coach
Mike Varga commented on the first 10 minutes of tonight's matchup.
The Vol's went on to score four more goals in the match over Gardner-Webb, further sealing a win for Tennessee at the Regal Soccer Stadium.
Looking ahead to next week's matchup Varga said, "Non-conference is over. We have to be ready to start strong next week and I have a lot of confidence in this group that we will be ready for the Big South opener verses Charleston Southern next Sunday."
Next week Gardner-Webb Women's Soccer returns to Greene-Harbison Stadium to take on Big South Conference opponent Charleston Southern on February 21
st at 6:00 PM.
