Track & Field Preview: Big South Conference Outdoor Championship
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb Track & Field will travel up to High Point today to compete in the 2021 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championship from May 10-12. The Runnin' Bulldogs will be competing in 14 total events in the championship meet with eight of those being track events, and six fielding events.
During Petra Jakeljic's career at Gardner-Webb she has been named to the Big South Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference Team three years in a row (2017, 2018, 2019) and ranks ninth overall in the Hammer Throw on the Big South All-Time Top 10 Performance list (59.02m / 193-08 Petra Jakeljic, Gardner-Webb (at Terrier Relays, 3-30-19). Petra holds a top three program record in the hammer with a mark of 59.02 meters. During this season, Jakelijic's best performance in the hammer came at the Virginia Grand Prix where she took sixth in the event by hitting a mark of 56.43 meters. At the 2021 Big South Conference Championship meet Petra looks to compete in the javelin and hammer throw.
During Kenny VanVorst's 2021 outdoor season, he had a personal best in the hammer throw by hitting a mark of 58.31 meters at the Winthrop Tri Meet on March 13th. VanVortst's performance at the Winthrop Tri Meet landed him a fifth-place spot on the Top 10 program history list in the hammer throw. VanVorst will be competing in the hammer at the 2021 Big South Conference Championship.
This season Taylor Hotchkiss landed herself a spot on the Top 10 women's long jump program list. Hotchkiss earned the 10th overall spot in program history by hitting a mark of 5.26 meters at the Winthrop Invitational, where she took fourth-place in the event. Hotchkiss will represent Gardner-Webb in the Heptathlon this year at the championship meet.
