BOILING SPRINGS – Fresh off of its most successful finish since joining the Big South Conference, Gardner-Webb baseball announced its 2022 spring schedule on Wednesday afternoon.
The schedule features 14 games against teams who participated in the 2021 NCAA Baseball Championship.
The Diamond 'Dogs will played 18 home games before the end of March, beginning with the 2022 Jerry Bryson Classic on February 18. The event will feature NCAA regional participants NJIT and Virginia, as well as Bellarmine.
Gardner-Webb will open the season against NJIT on February 18, will play Virginia and Bellarmine on February 19 and will close out the weekend with a final game against Bellarmine on February 20.
A three-game set at NCAA regional participant and perennial ACC power Georgia Tech is up next (February 25-27), followed by a game at nearby Charlotte – another 2021 NCAA regional team.
A 10-game home stand follows, beginning with Dartmouth on March 4. A trip to South Carolina on March 15 will set up the start of Big South Conference play – at home against High Point on March 18.
A four-game set with Southern Conference regular season champion Wofford follows. Non-conference tilts with UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, Wake Forest and North Carolina will break up the weekend Big South Conference matchups the rest of the way.
Gardner-Webb went 29-23 last season – including a 27-13 mark in league play. The third-place finish for the Runnin' Bulldogs was the highest in any conference since joining the Division I ranks in 2001.
Head Coach
Jim Chester has led Gardner-Webb's resurgence, posting 37 wins during his tenure in Boiling Springs. A strong recruiting class will be asked to replace much of GWU's offensive production in 2022.
