Gardner-Webb Mounts Comeback, Earns Point Behind Turlington’s 2 Goals

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb (7-4-3; 2-1-1) tied Campbell (6-3-3; 2-0-2) by a score of 2-2 in the Big South Conference matchup Tuesday afternoon from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Maddie Turlington, who entered the match second in goals scored, added two more for the second consecutive game to reclaim the nation's top spot.
After falling behind in the second half, Turlington tucked away a penalty kick to bring the game within one in the 53rd minute. Forty-Four seconds later she sent one over the goalkeeper from just inside the 18-yard box to even the score at two.
The senior forward's 39 career goals moved her into sole possession of 4th all time for career goals scored at Gardner-Webb.
"I'm very proud of the overall effort, especially the ability we showed to come back from a two-goal deficit against an incredibly talented team," said head coach Mike Varga. "We made too many errors due to some undisciplined moments, but we responded to the challenge to cut those down in the second half."
Goalkeeper Chloe Leffler set the tone for the Runnin' Bulldogs defense with five saves in the draw. She faced 21 shots in the match and her record shifted to 6-2-1 with the tie.
Gardner-Webb's offense made the most of its opportunities, burying two of their five shots. Turlington took four and Autumn Woodard had the only other attempt.
"We had some players who couldn't go the full 90 minutes, so we used a different lineup and our team stepped up," said Varga. "It was a good job by us to get a point after being down two goals early in the second half."
The Runnin' Bulldogs are next in action Saturday, October 8, when they travel to take on Winthrop. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Rock Hill.
