CLINTON, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University women's basketball team (4-10, 1-1 Big South) came from behind on Saturday afternoon at Presbyterian (2-13, 0-2 Big South), using 21 fourth quarter points to score its first Big South Conference win of the season.
In a contest where offensive was at a premium, it would be the Runnin' Bulldogs doing just enough on that end of the court to score a victory on Saturday afternoon in Clinton. In the first quarter alone, Gardner-Webb managed just a 4-of-17 clip while Presbyterian shot only 5-of-17 from the deck. Sophomore guard
Lauren Bailey poured in some of her best minutes of the season early on for GWU, helping to pace the 'Dawgs with two early three pointers.Â
Despite trailing at the half and continuing to have some offensive struggles, Gardner-Webb picked up key contributions from the bench to stay in the game. Freshman guard
Kendall Scott gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a short-lived 19-18 lead with 4:29 left in the second, while junior guard
Nyla Walker also pitched in with a pair of made field goals. Walker put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead 23-22 with a jumper in the lane with 1:18 to go before PC beat the halftime buzzer on the other end. At the break, Gardner-Webb trailed 27-23.
Outscoring Presbyterian 18-16 in the third, the Runnin' Bulldogs began to inch back. Senior guard
Ashley Hawkins attacked the basket to the tune of nine third quarter points for GWU, while sophomore guard
Elle Blatchford made a huge solo effort just ahead of the buzzer. Blatchford recorded a steal in the back-court, pulled up for three, missed, got her own miss and finished at the tin for a huge two points, After three, GWU had clawed back to down just 43-41.
Finally in the fourth, the Runnin' Bulldogs took control. After freshman center
Maja Rohkohl knocked in her only point of the game at the free throw line with 4:08 to go to give Gardner-Webb a 51-50 lead, the 'Dawgs wouldn't trail again. Hawkins went into takeover mode for GWU, scoring eight points down the stretch, including a tough jumper in the lane with 1:10 that put Gardner-Webb up five, 59-54. Hawkins and Scott would each help ice the game at the line in the final 20 seconds in route to a 62-58 win.
Leaders for Gardner-Webb include Hawkins with 22 points and a perfect 9-of-9 at the line, Rohkohl with one point and a season-high for any GWU player, 18 rebounds, and graduate forward
Elze Motekaityte who recorded another double-figure scoring game with 13 points, four rebounds. For the game, Gardner-Webb shot just 20-of-55 but knocked down 18-of-20 free throws.
