BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Defensive back Josiah Harris and place kicker Charlie Viorel of the Gardner-Webb football team have been named OVC-Big South Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league on Monday, November 17.
Harris had three interceptions as Gardner-Webb won its seventh game of the season in defeating Tennessee State 30-14 in Nashville. The three interceptions are the most by a FCS player nationally this season and established a new OVC-Big South single-game record. Harris intercepted a pass late in the first quarter, added his second one on the second play of the second quarter and completed the hat trick later in that quarter. He also added four tackles (two solo) and a half a tackle for loss.
Viorel scored 12 points while making all of his attempts in Gardner-Webb's 30-14 win at Tennessee State. The junior connected on a 26-yard field goal to open the game and then added a 28 and 26-yarder in the second quarter. He was also 3-of-3 on PAT attempts and averaged 64.0 yards on seven kickoffs (seven of which went for touchbacks). Viorel, who earned the award for the fourth time this season, ranks 15th nationally in field goals made per game (1.27).
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, November 22, playing host to Western Illinois in the regular season finale. With a win, the Dawgs will eclipse the 8-win mark for the first time since the 2002 season. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. inside Spangler Stadium. All fans are encouraged to attend as the Gardner-Webb Athletic Department is providing promotions and giveaways for the game. Be sure to check @gwusports for details.
