Indoor Season Begins for GWU at JDL Fast Track Early Bird Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb track and field team began its indoor season with a string of solid individual performances on Sunday afternoon at the JDL Fast Track Early Bird Invitational

Freshman Skye Jackson impressed for GWU early in the women's 60 meter dash, scoring an 11th place finish with a time of 7.89 seconds. Jackson also competed in the women's 200 meters later on, placing third in 25.04 seconds

In her first indoor race for the Runnin' Bulldogs, freshman Laura Covarrubias placed 12th in the women's 60 meter hurdles, recording a time of 9.03 seconds. Covarrubias would star in the women's 400 meters later in the day, winning the event in 59.59 seconds

Sophomore Angel Urugutia led the way for the Dawgs in the men's 400 meters. Urugutia crossed the line in 50.65 seconds for a sixth place finish

GWU picked up another top ten in the men's long jump. Sophomore Joshua Powell got off to a good start in his indoor season, placing ninth in the event with a distance of 6.51 meters

In one of the Runnin' Bulldogs most impressive events of the day, GWU scored two top-fives and a win in the women's 800 meters. Freshman Karsyn Huskey won the event in 2:16, while sophomore Emily Leatherman was fifth in 2:23

GWU also scored a pair of top-tens in the women's 1000 meters, with freshman Maggie Dirks seventh in 3:09, while Brooke Hope was eighth in 3:16

In the first of several strong field events, junior Teandra Clemons placed fourth in the women's long jump, recording a distance of 5.68 meters. Clemons would go on to place sixth in the women's triple jump with 11.71 meters later in the day

Sophomore Magnum Chesnut was also strong in the men's shot put, finishing fourth place by recording a distance of 14.60 meters

Meanwhile in the women's shot put, Adrionna Coleman put together another strong outing for Gardner-Webb, placing fourth with a distance of 12.42 meters

In the men's weight throw, Gardner-Webb scored a win via Robert Joseph. Joseph took first place with a distance of 17.83 meters

Perhaps the most impressive event for Gardner-Webb was the women's weight throw, where the Runnin' Bulldogs placed first, second, fourth and tenth. Senior Madison Boyd won the event with a distance of 17.40 meters, junior Zoie Johnson was second with 16.35 meters, freshman Hanna Hoffman fourth with 14.93 meters, and freshman Ella Riggs placed tenth with 12.37 meters
