
Track and Field in Action at WUPax Invitational on Friday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University track and field team was in action on Friday afternoon just an hour down the road, taking part in the WUPax Invitational hosted by Winthrop
Junior Jessica Perriello led the way for GWU on Friday afternoon, winning the women's 800 meter race. With a blistering time of 2:15.41, Perriello took the top spot by nearly four full seconds. Also competing for Gardner-Webb was sophomore Evelyn Gordon, who placed sixth in 2:27.39
Over in the men's 800 meters, junior Gabe Morrison and sophomore Austin DeGeorge led a series of Runnin' Bulldogs. Morrison took 11th place by way of 2:00.49, while DeGeorge was 12th after finishing the race in 2:02.59
Women's hammer throw proved to be a successful event for Gardner-Webb, with senior Selah Holcombe finishing near the top of the leaderboard. Holcombe recorded a distance of 45.48 meters to take home second place in finals. Gardner-Webb also took second in men's hammer throw, where freshman Jonathan Garrett scored a distance of 46.75 meters.
GWU continued a great recent run on men's javelin, where senior Luke Gordy won the event on Friday. Gordy finished nearly five meters ahead of second place, taking the top spot with a distance of 52.68 meters.
Women's long jump was the best event of the day for the Runnin' Bulldogs, where GWU claimed first, second and fourth in finals. Winning the event, sophomore Teandra Clemons scored a distance of 5.90 meters, junior Jada Pittman was second with 5.90 meters on the board, while Isa van Sintemaartensdijk came fourth, posting 5.35 meters.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to Rock Hill on Saturday, with 23 events at the WUPax Invitational scheduled for final round of competition
