June 09, 2026 | Track & Field
EUGENE, OR - After a successful showing at last week's NCAA East Regional Championships, senior Quentin Peterson now prepares for his shot at this week's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships
Competing in shot put and in a field largely of power conference athletes, Peterson placed ninth at the NCAA East Regional Championships back on May 27th. With a mark of 18.81 meters in men's shot put, he became the first GWU athlete since 2015 to punch a ticket to Eugene. Peterson's mark is the second best in Gardner-Webb history for an outdoor meet, trailing only his own record of 19.60 set during this year's Big South Conference Championships just a couple of weeks prior.
The senior from McDonough, Ga. made waves back in March when he recorded the highest ever finish by a Runnin' Bulldogs participant at a national event, finishing 13th and earning Second Team All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Peterson recorded three throws, his first 18.68 meters, his second 18.92 meters, and his third 18.06 meters. With his mark of 18.92 going on the board for a record-setting finish
Competing at a second national event in 2026 only adds to Peterson's list of accolades at Gardner-Webb which include the 2024 and 2025 Big South Outdoor Men's Most Valuable Athlete awards, the 2025 and 2026 Big South Outdoor shot put championships, the 2025 Big South Outdoor discus and hammer throw championships, a 2024 Big South Outdoor all-academic team selection, the 2025 and 2026 Big South Indoor shot put championships, and the 2024, 2025 and 2026 Big South Indoor weight throw championships, as well as the 2026 Big South Indoor Most Outstanding Performance award
Peterson is scheduled to take part in the men's shot put event, scheduled for Wednesday evening at 10:10 pm eastern time. All the action can be seen live on ESPN as Peterson hopes to land one of the best results in school history yet again
