Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Jacksonville State in 3-2 Non-Conference Battle

Boiling Springs, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team suffered a hard-fought 3-2 defeat against Jacksonville State University on Wednesday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Field.
Gardner-Webb (3-5-1) got off to a rapid start in the opening minutes. Julia McBride struck early to put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead 1-0 at the 1:54 mark. Jacksonville State (3-4-2) answered in the 16th minute when Emma Reeder found the back of the net to equalize. The Runnin' Bulldogs reclaimed the lead before halftime as Madison Reynolds converted an assist from Morgan Dewitt in the 43rd minute, bringing the score to 2-1 heading into the break.
The Gamecocks surged back late in the second half. Rebecca Sierra-Burciaga leveled the match at 2-2 with a successful penalty kick in the 76th minute. Just under three minutes later, Amelia Jacobs notched the game-winner for Jacksonville State off assists from Sierra-Burciaga and Lily Cornwell at 78:14.
Tensions mounted in the closing minutes, resulting in a red card issued to Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Abril Montiel at 79:19. Montiel finished her performance with four saves before being relieved by Lydia Robinson for the final 10 minutes.
