Runnin' Bulldogs Rally Past Charleston Southern with Late Goal

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Zoë Marqué scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute as the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field.
The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 5-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Big South play with their second consecutive conference victory. Charleston Southern is 2-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Charleston Southern struck first just 73 seconds into the match, but Gardner-Webb quickly answered with Julia McBride's penalty kick in the 10th minute to level the match at 1-1. The goal marked McBride's team-leading seventh of the season.
After a back-and-forth opening half, the teams entered the break tied. Charleston Southern held an 8-2 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes, but Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Abril Montiel made four saves to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs within striking distance.
Gardner-Webb continued to battle throughout the second half and the Runnin' Bulldogs finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Marqué found the back of the net off an assist from Noor Reslan, giving the team its first lead of the day.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' defense held firm over the closing minutes, preserving the 2-1 victory.
Gardner-Webb finished the match with six shots, including three on goal, while Charleston Southern recorded 11 shots with five on target.
