Bulldogs Blank Keydets, 4-0
October 10, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb extended their winning streak to three games on Tuesday night, as they defeated the VMI Keydets in non-conference action, 4-0. For this home stand the Bulldogs are 3-0, with two of those wins being shutouts.
The win boosts Gardner-Webbs record to 4-6-2 overall for the year, while the loss drops Big South member VMI to 2-10-1.
The Bulldog offense was kicking on all cylinders tonight, as GWU controlled the ball for most of the first half, striking both early and often.
Freshman Boris Gatzky scored the first goal of the match early in the first period, knocking the ball past the VMI goalkeeper and into the right side of the net giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0. Junior Richard Godfrey assisted on the goal.
Close to 10 minutes later, at the 16:24 mark, Gatzky would strike again, as this time he received a pass from fellow freshman Logan Swaim, who flicked the ball to Gatzky setting him up right in front of the goal. Gatzky then took aim and fired a line drive shot that hit off the front left post and darted into the right side of the net. The assist was Swaim's first career point at Gardner-Webb.
With a 2-0 lead coming out of halftime, the 'Dogs continued to set the pace for the entire second half.
At the 58:10 mark, sophomore Ryan Snodgrass put the game out of reach, scoring his first goal of the season putting a shot into the back of the net off a Godfrey pass.
The 'Dogs would cap off the scoring at the 80:27 mark, when redshirt-freshman Ford Quarterman took a great pass from sophomore Dirk Dittrich and just put a shot over VMI's keeper Thomas Upton and across the goal line giving GWU a 4-0 lead.
Senior Tyler Kettering was once again solid between the posts for the Bulldogs, stopping 10 VMI shot attempts overall, with six of those shots coming in the first half.
Gatzky's two goals gives him three for the year, while Godfrey's two assists for the match moves him up to six for the season.
Gardner-Webb (4-6-2, 3-1-0) will return back to Atlantic Sun conference play on Saturday, October 14, when they will play host to in-state rival Campbell at 5 p.m.
Gardner-Webb's last home match will be on October 23, at 7 p.m. when they will face off in non-conference action with UNC-Asheville. That game will be "Senior Night" for the 'Dogs, as they will honor their four seniors before the opening kick.
