
Men's Soccer Falls to Charlotte; Kettering Ties GWU's Career Saves Leader

Charlotte, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team was in non-conference action on Wednesday night, as they traveled just down the road to Charlotte, N.C. to face off with the Charlotte 49ers.
The Bulldogs came out firing, but could not find the back of the net, falling to Charlotte 3-0. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-4-2, while the 49ers improve to 4-3-1 on the year.
In the first half, Gardner-Webb would get off six shots but to no avail, as Charlotte's GK David Martin was solid in the net stopping five of the shots that were on frame.
Not to be outdone, GWU keeper Tyler Kettering stopped six 49ers' shots in the first half, taking the score into halftime at 0-0.
The first goal of the came at the 62:32 mark, when Charlotte's Nathan Mathers put a header off a Pete Palomino corner kick into the net past Kettering, giving the 49ers a 1-0 lead.
The 49ers would add two more insurance goals, as Jered Turner scored on a shot from just inside the box on the right side at the 74:14 mark and Coleman Hall would put a ball into the goal from 35 yards out at the 83:09 mark.
The Bulldogs would have 11 shots for the match, with seven of those shots being on goal. Newcomers Richard Godfrey and Boris Gatzky would each have a pair of shots put on frame, while senior Jonathan Black and sophomores Chris Salvaggione and Bradley Morrison had the other three.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Kettering had 10 saves for the contest, moving him into a tie for first-place on the Gardner-Webb Men's Soccer Career Saves list. Kettering is currently tied with Brooks Derrick with 362 saves for their careers.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Monday, September 25, when they will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on the Liberty Flames. The match, which was rescheduled from its original date of September 1 due to rain and poor field conditions, is slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
