MACON, Ga. Gardner-Webb standout Grayson Flittner was
named Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball Player of the Week
Monday by the league office.
The 6-0, 190-pound sophomore scorched the nets often during a
grueling schedule for the Runnin' Bulldogs (4-2), averaging 21.8
points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game over a four-game
stretch. During those games, Flittner made an amazing 23-of-43
attempts from three-point range (53.4 percent) including
three separate games with at least six makes from long
distance.
With Gardner-Webb playing its third game in three days and
fourth in five Flittner answered the bell at Radford. He hit
5-of-5 chances from deep in the first half, and finished the game
with a career-high 28 points in a heroic 39 minutes of action.
Flittner knocked down 6-of-10 chances from three-point range in the
game, matching his effort against Oklahoma the night before
when he led GWU with 18 points on six three-pointers.
Against Big East contender UConn two nights earlier, Flittner
banged home 4-of-7 three-point shots for 16 points. He hit seven
treys for 25 points in a home win over North Greenville last
Tuesday night. Flittner played an average of 31.5 minutes per game
for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
He was named to the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic All-Tournament
Team, after impressing onlookers at Madison Square Garden.
Flittner's 23 makes from three-point range are notable, as he
knocked down just 25 three-pointers in 27 games last season. His 27
treys so far in 2007-2008 are more than seven other Atlantic Sun
Conference teams have combined to make.
The Sharpsville, Ind., native leads Gardner-Webb in scoring with
19.3 points per game, and has made 27-of-53 chances from the
bonusphere in six starts. He has helped Gardner-Webb pace the A-Sun
in scoring so far (77.7 ppg) and has seen GWU reach the 80-point
mark more times in six games than in 30 games last season.
Gardner-Webb has another tough week in store, with a rematch
against Connecticut on Tuesday night this time at the
Hartford Civic Center (7:30 pm ET tip, ESPN Plus). GWU will then
break for Thanksgiving before traveling to face No. 22 Clemson on
Saturday, Nov. 24 in Littlejohn Coliseum.
