LYNCHBURG, Va. Despite poor conditions due to the weather, the Gardner-Webb student-athletes prevailed, setting two school records at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier Thursday. It marked the last track meet that the squads would compete in before the A-Sun Championships next week.
Kelly Bridges vaulted a school-record setting height of 3.60m (11'9.75"), earning a fifth-place finish in the event. Elizabeth Maxwell, in her first year throwing the hammer, posted a school-record mark of 44.33m (145'5") to finish second by a mere four inches.
In addition to Bridges' vault, teammate Merissa Hawkins recorded a personal-best effort of 3.30m (10'10") for a seventh-place finish.
Rookie Kayla Morgan had a standout performance in the triple jump, claiming the top spot with a performance of 11.11m (36'5.50"). In the long jump, Victoria Argus had a mark of 5.04m (16'6.50") to finish fourth.
Senior Michele Milner crossed the line in 11th place in the 1,500m. Milner's time of 4:58.78 is a season best for her and is the third-best time of any GWU student-athlete in the event this year.
On the men's side, Elliott Haynie's vault of 4.90m (16'0.75") gave the Bulldogs' their top finish of the meet, garnering second place. Teammate Jeremy Longshore cleared the same height, but was third due to jumps.
Tomas Sanders represented GWU well in the triple jump, earning third place with an effort of 12.04m (39'6").
A pack of Bulldogs finished together in the discus. Cody MacArthur was third with a distance of 43.19m (141'8") while Michael Buckshaw was fourth with an effort of 41.49m (136'1"). Corey Scott took fifth after a mark of 39.99m (131'2").
In the hammer throw, MacArthur again was the top Bulldog, placing third with a throw of 51.62m (169'4"). Matt Knippen was sixth in the event 42.31m (138'10") while Buckshaw's distance of 40.73m (133'7") was good enough for eighth.
Scott placed fourth in the shot put with an effort of 13.36m (43'10") while the lone runner for GWU, Alex Nimmo, also took fourth. Nimmo was fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:01.54.
The Bulldogs will now have some rest before taking aim at conference titles next week. GWU will head to Johnson City, Tenn., and compete in the A-Sun Championships May 11-12.
