September 14, 2007 | Volleyball
CONWAY, S.C. The Gardner-Webb volleyball team was unable to get back on track after a tough loss Friday morning to Coastal Carolina, and fell to highly touted Delaware 3-0 (19-30, 16-30, 12-30) Friday afternoon on the first day of the Coastal Carolina Tournament.
The Bulldogs now stand at 7-7 on the year while the Blue Hens improve to 12-2.
GWU was led by Heidi Steinebrunner's eight kills. Audra Harrison added seven while hitting .222 the best of anyone on the team that had at least 10 total attacks.
Sophomore Regina Feagin dished out 25 assists while sophomore Brett Wilson racked up a season-high 13 digs. Junior Katie Matykowski added 10 digs.
The Bulldogs fell behind 7-1 to start the match and struggled to put points on the board in the early going. Down 12-5, three straight kills by Steinebrunner got the offense going. However, GWU followed that up with back-to-back attack errors by Steinebrunner, giving Delaware a 14-8 advantage.
With the score 21-13 in favor of the Blue Hens, the Bulldogs managed to put consecutive points on the board, but head coach Chris Phillips' squad was unable to do very much damage the rest of the way, falling 30-19 in game one.
GWU was down 5-1 right out of the gate in game two, but the team rallied around one another through the first third of the contest, remaining down just four at 11-7. Once again, the Blue Hens battled back to more than double up the Bulldogs at 20-9.
Down by 15 at 26-11, kills by Carrie Long and Bethany Martin, along with GWU's lone service ace of the match by Matykowski brought the designated visitors to within 12, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize off the momentum, dropping a 30-16 decision in game two.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the match at 2-1 in game three when Long blocked a Blue Hen, but it wouldn't last long. Delaware scored the next two points, but GWU drew even at four on a service error.
Delaware went on a 9-1 run to break open the match. The Bulldogs then scored three of the next four points, but could get no closer as the Blue Hens continued to shut down GWU's offensive attack.
The Bulldogs hit just .111 compared to .441 for Delaware.
GWU will try to go above .500 again tomorrow morning when it
takes on Buffalo at 11 a.m. Buffalo is 1-13 heading into its match
against Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. tonight.
