GWU Wraps Up Second Preseason Scrimmage Saturday Morning
August 16, 2008 | Football
BOILING SPRINGS With only 12 days remaining until kickoff
at Tennessee Tech, Gardner-Webb got in solid work during a 60-play,
officiated scrimmage Saturday in Spangler Stadium.
The Bulldog defense proved stingy for much of the session, allowing
their offensive counterparts into the end zone just once during the
regular scrimmage action with Stan Doolittle (6-3, 210, Jr.)
hitting Philip Peoples (6-0, 215, Jr.) for an eight-yard scoring
strike.
The only other scoring in the game came from redshirt freshman
kicker Bradley Williams (6-3, 185), who nailed field goals from 42
and 35 yards recovering nicely from a tough start early in
the scrimmage.
The GWU defense was able to pressure the backfield well Saturday,
attacking from several positions. In all, the Bulldogs recorded six
touch "sacks" in the scrimmage as GWU quarterbacks are off
limits during preseason work.
The defensive star Saturday was true freshman bandit end Jordan
Woods (6-3, 225), who has entrenched himself as a starter already
during preseason camp. The West Charlotte (N.C.) High product
recorded three sacks and three pressures during the action.
Reserve cornerback Ricky Rhodes (5-7, 161, Fr.) broke up two passes
to lead the secondary, including one in the end zone that erased
what would have been a sure touchdown catch. Starting corners
Cedric McGowan (6-0, 193, Jr.) and Bryce Nixon (5-11, 182, So.)
also had break ups.
Linebacker Oluwadamilola Teniola (5-11, 220, So.) had two tackles
for loss against the run and Kyle Daye (6-1, 256, Sr.), Marty
Patterson (6-3, 212, So.) and Jeffrey Williams (6-0, 221, So.) each
had sacks as well.
The offense did have several bright spots, and moved the ball well
during several stages of the morning action. Doolittle completed
13-of-21 passes for 167 yards and a score, and reserve Devin
Campbell (6-4, 197, Sr.) connected on 7-of-10 passes for 67 yards.
Neither Bulldog quarterback threw an interception, and the offense
completed the scrimmage without a turnover.
Receiver Tre Perry (6-0, 172, RFr.) had perhaps the biggest impact
on the day, catching six passes for 102 yards. That total included
a screen pass from Doolittle that Perry turned into a 63-yard gain.
Dobson Collins (6-2, 188, Sr.) continued to impress, darting 22
yards on a nice reverse play and catching four passes.
Perry, from Greensboro, N.C., has emerged as a bonafide starter and
deep threat alongside Collins, which should help GWU makeup for the
graduation loss of three-time All-Big South selection Duvuaghn
Flagler.
NOTES: Gardner-Webb worked on special teams and pass skeleton
drills prior to the start of Saturday's scrimmage ... Freshman
quarterback John Rock (6-3, 207) tossed three touchdowns during the
skeleton session, hitting Jamal Patmon (6-6, 195, So.), Darren
Rogers (6-0, 205, Jr.) and Lyndon Leslie (6-2, 197, RFr.) on three
consecutive scoring strikes.
