Mario Brown Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb linebacker Mario Brown has
been named first-team Academic All-District III by ESPN the
Magazine.
Brown (Greenville, S.C. / J.L. Mann HS) will now be eligible for
the 2009 Academic All-America ballot.
The 6-foot-2, 239-pound fifth-year senior was one of four
linebackers named to the team, which includes NCAA Division I
schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and
Virginia. Joining Brown on the squad at his position were Clemson's
Brandon Maye, UCF's Jordan Richards and The Citadel's Jeremy
Buncum.
Brown, an NCAA Division I FCS All-America choice in 2006 and 2007
on the field, carries a 3.61 cumulative grade point average with a
major in political science. He plans to attend law school upon
graduation from Gardner-Webb, and was part of a special group of
students chosen to attend the January, 2009, presidential
inauguration in Washington, D.C.
Brown ranks second on Gardner-Webb's stat sheet this season with 72
tackles (37 solo) and has 6.0 tackles for loss, four pass break ups
and an interception to his credit. For his career, Brown has 300
total tackles (144 solo), 27.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks. His
tackling total ranks 16th in school history for a career.
Gardner-Webb (5-4, 2-2 Big South) hosts No. 16 Liberty this weekend
in its final home game of the 2009 season. Kickoff is set for 1:30
pm on Norman Harris Field at Spangler Stadium.
