Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team will look to gain momentum in conference play this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs host a pair of Big South Conference matches during Family Weekend on Gardner-Webb's campus.
On Thursday, GWU hosts the Liberty Lady Flames (5-3-1) (2-0) in a match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Gardner-Webb split the season series with Liberty last season, dropping a match in Lynchburg during the regular season but taking the win on penalty kicks in the Big South tournament semifinals a season ago.
On Saturday, the Runnin' Bulldogs play host to the High Point Panthers (4-7-1) (2-0) in a match slated to start at 7 p.m. GWU most recently matched up with High Point in the 2010 Big South Championship game which the Panthers took 1-0.
Gardner-Webb will look for its veteran leadership to make a positive impact this weekend just as it has thus far in the 2011 season, particularly on the offensive end. Seniors Dawn Rollyson and Megan Reimer will look to extend their season total for goals scored (6 goals and 2 goals respectively) and give the Runnin' Bulldogs a much needed offensive edge this weekend.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will also look to freshman Megan Curan in its offensive attack, whose two assists thus far in 2011 are a team high. Curan has also posted 66.7% of her shots on goal, second on the team, and has scored three goals this season.
On the defensive end, Gardner-Webb senior Tina Frost and junior Taylor Napoli will look to shut down high-energy attacks from both Liberty and High Point, teams who scored three and four goals in their most recent games. Leadership by the senior defenders, along with heady play by freshman defender Addison Abee, will be key to helping GK Erika Lenns keep the opposition off the scoreboard
