Wallace, N.C. - With Tuesday mornings final round cancelled due to inclement weather, which included severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings in the Wilmington area, the Gardner-Webb women's golf team finished in eighth-place overall with a combined two round team score of 646, +70, at the River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C.
Like the other nine teams in the field, the Runnin' Bulldogs battled flag-bending wind conditions and fast greens on Monday to card rounds of 316 and 330, to finish with a two-round combined score of 646, +70, seven strokes behind the host school and seventh-place finisher UNC Wilmington (639).
Sophomore Lauren Smith paced the Runnin' Bulldogs, as she carded rounds of 78 and 80 on Monday to shoot a two-round combined score of 158, +14, to finish in a tie at 17th-place.
Finishing only one stroke behind Smith was fellow teammate Meghan Allum, who turned in rounds of 81 and 78 to shoot a combined score of 159, +15, good enough to finish in a tie at 22nd-place, while fellow sophomore Hannah Hellyer shot a GWU low round 75 in the first round and an 88 second round to finish the event with a combined score of 163, +19, to place in a tie for 38th-place overall.
Rounding out the scoring for Gardner-Webb was Sammy Vass, as the sophomore recorded rounds of 82 and 84 to finish with a score of 166, +12, and in a tie for 47th-place, while senior Courtney Meyer had to withdraw from the tournament in the first round of play.
Due to the cancellation of the third and final round on Tuesday, East Carolina earned the first-place win, shooting a combined team score of 603, +27, while Old Dominion (616) and Elon (622) finished second and third, respectively.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will now set its sights on the 2011 Big South Women's Golf Conference Championship Tournament hosted by the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C. from April 11-13th.
