The Game
Gardner-Webb takes on NCAA Division II foe Brevard College in its home opener on Saturday, November 29 at 2:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena. The game will air live on the Big South Network.
Series Notes
Gardner-Webb leads the all-time series with Brevard, 3-0. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the last meeting with the Tornados, 81-68, in 2002.
The Coaches
Gardner-Webb's Tim Craft is in his second season with the Runnin' Bulldogs, leading GWU to an 18-15 record last winter while being named a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award.
Lee Burgess is in his third season at Brevard, bringing an 8-49 career record into today's contest. Burgess previously spent nine years as an assistant at Samford, his alma mater, where he helped the Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999 and 2000.
Last Time Out
Old Dominion outscored Gardner-Webb by a 30-20 margin in the second half, and held the Runnin' Bulldogs to under 30 percent from the floor en route to a 58-46 win in the consolation game of the 15th annual Ezybonds Global Payments US Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Monday evening.
Old Dominion (4-1) shot 39 percent from the floor on the night, including a 41 percent clip in the first half, while holding Gardner-Webb (2-3) to a field goal percentage of 29.1 percent in the contest. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the battle on the glass by a 41-36 margin, including a 12-7 advantage on the offensive boards, as the Monarchs outscored Gardner-Webb in the paint, 22-12.
Jerome Hill (Adel, Ga.) paced Gardner-Webb with a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.) added 10 points with a 3-for-6 night from downtown as Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jarvis Davis (Columbia, S.C.) each grabbed six boards.
Looking at Brevard
Brevard is off to a rough start this season, as the Tornados are still looking for their first win following a 66-61 loss at home to Tusculum in their South Atlantic Conference opener. Daris Moose leads the way for Brevard on the offensive end, entering today's game averaging 20.4 points per game while knocking down 11-of-26 from three-point range.
Phil Wallace has made a strong contribution as well, averaging 16.4 points per game and draining 13 shots from behind the arc so far this season. The Tornados were picked to finish ninth in the South Atlantic Conference this season after finishing second-to-last with a 4-18 mark in league play last season.
