BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Gardner-Webb incoming freshman Patricia Yordan, has been selected to represent the Puerto Rico women's national team in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
Yordan was one of two goalkeepers selected for the national team. No stranger to representing her native country, Yordan also was a member of the U17 national team.
"It is quite an honor to be selected to represent your country at any level and I am happy for Patricia to be able to represent Puerto Rico at the U20 level," commented Gardner-Webb women's soccer head coach Mike Varga. "Patricia has gained some valuable experience this summer with the national team and will be in top form when she gets to camp in August. "
This past week, Puerto Rico was victorious in the first round of qualifying, defeating Curacao (5-0), Anguilla (8-0), and Antigua and Barbuda (3-1), and advances to the second round of qualifying that will take place Oct. 16-25 in Haiti.
Puerto Rico will be one of eight teams competing in the Championships, which consists of three teams from the Caribbean, two from the Central American Football Union, and three from North America.
The eight teams will be divided into two groups of four, and the winner and runner-up from each group will advance to the semifinals.
The winner of each semifinal match advances to the final and also qualifies for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, which will be held in Papua, New Guinea. The losing semifinalists will meet in the match for third place with the winner claiming the Confederation's final berth.
