CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb right-handed pitcher Landon Mitchell has been named the Big South Conference Come Ready Nutrition Freshman of the Week for games played during the final week of the regular season, as announced today by the Conference office.
Mitchell (Kernersville, N.C. / East Forsyth H.S.) had his best outing to date this past Friday evening as he worked five scoreless innings in an 11-0 win over UNC Asheville. The righty fanned a career-high eight batters and issued no walks while scattering three base hits. He also retired eight straight batters at one stretch and only allowed one UNC Asheville runner to reach scoring position.
No. 7 Gardner-Webb will face No. 2 Liberty to open the 2017 Big South Conference Championship on Tuesday morning at 9:30 am in Lexington, S.C. The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the regular season in a three-way tie for fifth place with Radford and UNC Asheville, but by virtue of tiebreaker, GWU was given the No. 7 seed.
