ATLANTA, Ga. – Gardner-Webb dropped a four-set decision to Alabama State Saturday afternoon as action continues in the SWAC/MEAC Crossover Tournament.
The Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 1-1 on the season, while Alabama State improves to 2-1 overall.
The Hornets took the opening set by a score of 25-18, but GWU responded with a 25-19 win in set two to tie the match at 1-1 at the break. Alabama State would take the following two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19 to seal the overall match win.
Both teams had 44 kills on the afternoon, yet GWU attacked at a .167 rate while ASU posted a .216 attack percentage.
"We ran into a determined, aggressive team that played a very different style from our game last night" stated GWU head coach Leo Sayles. "We were not as efficient, and Alabama State had a very effective counter attack. It was a good opportunity for us against a quality opponent. As we develop, I think the lessons from this loss can help us throughout the season."
Hannah Lancaster led the Gardner-Webb attack, collecting 12 kills on 33 swings, attacking at a .121 percentage.
Hannah Donaldson followed with seven smashes on 12 attempts. Donaldson also led the team on the block with one solo block and two block assists.
Charissa Coleman tallied a team-best 15 digs, while
Amanda Sahm led the 'Dogs with 20 assists.
Alabama State had a pair of attackers with double-digit kills, led by Bayle' Bennett with a match-high 16 smashes on 39 swings. Krysta Medearis had 11 kills on 21 attempts.
Kayla Torres led the Hornets with 16 digs while Kori Kutsch added a match-high 31 assists. Candace Martin was the team's leading blocker with five block assists.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action later this evening, taking on Alabama A&M at 6:00 pm to wrap up the SWAC/MEAC Crossover Tournament.
