July 24, 2019 | Baseball
ATLANTA, Ga. – Former Gardner-Webb standout Jeremy Walker was called up by the Atlanta Braves Wednesday afternoon, his first trip to the majors.
Walker has been strong on the mound this season for both Double-A Mississippi Braves and Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, posting a 2.84 ERA with 71 strikeouts and just eight walks in 69.2 innings of work.
The Advance, N.C. native earned Southern League All-Star honors earlier this season with the Mississippi Braves and was also part of a combined no hitter in a 2-0 win over the Jackson Generals on June 28, tossing two perfect innings to earn the save.
The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder had made 92 appearances throughout his minor league career, earning 18 wins and seven saves, fanning 309 batters to compile a 3.64 ERA.
Walker was selected by the Braves in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft and becomes the second Gardner-Webb product to make the major leagues, as catcher Blake Lalli made appearances with the Chicago Cubs in 2012, the Milwaukee Brewers in 2013, and the Braves in 2016.
Walker played for the Runnin' Bulldogs from 2014-2016, starting 30 games with 14 wins and 155 strikeouts in 181.0 innings of work to forge a 4.23 ERA.
In 2016 at Gardner-Webb, Walker posted a career-low 3.77 ERA in 15 starts, fanning a career-best 99 batters and only walked 27 men in 100.1 innings of work. The right-hander hurled three complete games that season, including a one-hitter in a 3-1 win over High Point on April 16 and had seven starts last at least 7.0 innings.
