CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's soccer had a pair of weekly award winners selected by the Big South Conference today as Oskar Wang was named Attacking Player of the Week and Jorge Salgado received Freshman of the Week honors.
"Oskar and Jorge both had an outstanding week on the pitch," said Tony Setzer. "They helped us to a hard-fought draw against George State and a win over George Mason. We've started to find our footing as a team and play together. We'll continue to work on our areas of emphasis before beginning Big South play on Saturday."
Wang (Neshollen, Norway / Vormsund NTG Kongsvinger) helped lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 1-0-1 record with a 2-2 draw against Georgia State last Tuesday and a 3-2 overtime win against George Mason on Saturday. His 10 points is the most among Big South players to date.
The junior forward tallied four total points with a goal in each contest. With his team down 2-1 against the Panthers on Tuesday, Wang received a pass from Hendrik Kortgodde on the left side of the field, just on the edge of the 18. Wang sent the ball into the upper 90, netting the equalizer in the 71st minute. The match went scoreless for the final 39 minutes as the 'Dogs earned the 2-2 draw against the Panthers in double overtime.
In Saturday's 3-2 win over the George Mason Patriots, Wang got the 'Dogs on the board early, scoring off a pass from the Salgado, the league's Freshman of the Week, in the sixth minute. His fifth goal of the season was from 10 yards out and was placed in the lower right corner of the net.
Salgado (Ies de Amea / Brion A Coruna, Spain) received his first weekly accolade from the Big South. He earned four points – scoring one goal and assisting on two others – in a pair of games last week.
He began the week by assisting on Pedro Benito's goal in the 52nd minute of the Georgia State match and was also credited with the assist on Wang's goal, which was Gardner-Webb's first score of the match against the George Mason Patriots.
Salgado's lone goal of the week came in a big way. After George Mason scored with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, Salgado ensured that the extra period lasted just 4:40. He took a pass from Abel Gebrekiros and scored the second game-winning goal of his career in just his seventh match. His two game-winners place him 16th among all Division I players. To date, he has tallied 10 points, which places him behind his teammate for the second-most points among conference players.
Salgado and Wang will lead the Runnin' Bulldogs into Big South Conference play on Saturday, September 28 when they host the Longwood Lancers. The match will be part of a doubleheader in Greene-Harbison Stadium with the women set to host the Hampton Pirates at 3 p.m. before the men take on the Lancers at 6 p.m.
