Runnin’ Bulldogs Open Weekend With 8-4 Win over Delaware Friday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A five-run fifth inning propelled the Runnin' Bulldogs to an 8-4 win over visiting Delaware Friday evening at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
 
Gardner-Webb (4-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Delaware (0-4) as Cam Pearcey blasted a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the third inning, his second home run of the season.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs seized control of the contest in the bottom of the fifth.  Ben LaSpaluto led off the frame, reaching after being hit by a pitch, and would score off of the bat of Mitch McLendon, who belted a RBI double to right field with one out.
 
Later in the inning with two outs, Carter Cunningham drove in a pair of runs on a bases-loaded double to left field, and Colton Sakamoto and LaSpaluto would each draw bases-loaded walks from Delaware reliever Reece Bolton to give Gardner-Webb a 7-0 lead.
 
The Blue Hens scratched in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to left field by Jack Goan. An in the top of the eighth, Goan would bring Delaware within three runs of the lead at 7-4 on a three-run blast to center field.
 
Gardner-Webb responded in the bottom of the eighth inning, tacking on an insurance run with Bo Rusher connecting with a double to the right field gap, plating LaSpaluto who led off the frame with a triple to center field.
 
Landon Mitchell (2-0) earned the win on the mound for GWU, tossing 7.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven base hits with five strikeouts.  Langdon Wilson hurled the final 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, fanning three batters to record his first save of 2020.
 
Chris Ludman (0-2) took the loss for the Blue Hens, surrendering seven runs on five base hits with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs totaled eight base hits on the evening, with McLendon (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) pacing that effort.

Delaware collected seven hits, with Vinny Vaccone (2-for-4) and Goan (2-for-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI) leading the way.
 
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting North Carolina A&T at 4:30 pm at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
