October 04, 2021 | Volleyball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season, Gardner-Webb volleyball's Mikah McIntosh has been named Big South Conference Libero of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
McIntosh, who also won the honor in the final week of August, becomes the second Runnin' Bulldog in program history to earn the Big South's defensive award twice in the same season.
A sophomore from Miami, Fla., McIntosh's stellar defensive efforts over the weekend helped boost Gardner-Webb to a pair of conference wins over Charleston Southern and Presbyterian as she combined for 53 digs, eight assists and two serves in two matches.
Facing a 3-0 deficit in a decisive fifth set against Charleston Southern on Friday, McIntosh kickstarted a rally for the 'Dogs with two service aces during the midst of a 5-0 run. The rally would ultimately help GWU overtake a lead in which it would refuse to relinquish while going on to finish the evening with 23 digs, three assists, two aces and one kill.
Returning to the floor a day later, McIntosh played a key role in holding Presbyterian to a .102 hitting percentage as the Runnin' Bulldogs downed the Blue Hose in four sets, 3-1. She registered 30 digs this time out, eclipsing 30 kills for just the second time of her career while also tying a career-high with five assists.
McIntosh, who has racked up 239 total digs in 51 sets this season, currently ranks No. 2 in the Big South in digs per set (4.69) and No. 3 in total digs overall (239). She checks in at No. 52 and No. 97 in each respective category for NCAA Division I.
With back-to-back wins over the weekend, Gardner-Webb improved to 3-1 in Big South competition to begin the season for the first time since 2013. The Runnin' Bulldogs also picked up consecutive wins over conference opponents in the same week for the first time since 2017.
GWU currently resides fourth overall in the Big South standings as the only 3-1 team, trailing a trio of 4-0 programs in High Point, Winthrop and Campbell.
Gardner-Webb will return to action this Friday when it hits the road to take on UNC Asheville on Friday, October 8 at 6 p.m. The 'Dogs will then get back to work the following day with a 2 p.m. first serve from Spartanburg, S.C. at USC Upstate.
