BOILING SPRINGS –
Mason Miller fanned 11 batters in six innings and allowed just two runs and Gardner-Webb hit two home runs in a 5-4 win over Wofford Friday in both teams' season opener.
Cam Pearcey belted a pitch over the left field fence to open the scoring in the first inning and, after Wofford (0-1) plated a pair of runs to go in front in the third,
Keiji Parkhurst blasted an opposite field shot in the bottom half of the inning to put Gardner-Webb back in front.
Parkhurst's two-run shot left the yard despite a stiff wind blowing in from right center.
Gardner-Webb (1-0) rode Miller from there, as the graduate transfer used a mid-upper 90s fastball to keep Wofford off balance. He fanned five batters in a row in the fourth and the fifth innings and, after allowing a two-out double, ended the threat with another strikeout.
Miller overcame a leadoff walk in the sixth with a fielder's choice ground ball and two more strikeouts to end the frame.
Gardner-Webb got some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, as
Patrick Ferguson hammered a two-run triple off the wall in right – just missing a home run. That knock scored Parkhurst and
Joe Simone for a 5-2 lead.
Wofford wasted little time with an answer, getting to the GWU bullpen in the top of the seventh.
The Terriers got a leadoff single from pinch hitter Brennen Dorighi and nine-hole hitter Matty Brown drew his second walk of the game to move pinch runner Zeb Roos to second. A sacrifice bunt put both men in scoring position and Lawson Hill cut the lead to 5-3 on a groundout to shortstop.
Wofford was able to pull closer, as a wild pitch allowed Brown to sprint home from third base.
Kyle Skidmore came out of the bullpen to halt the rally, however, and worked a perfect eighth inning to keep Gardner-Webb in front.
Closer
Langdon Wilson finished the game, sandwiching a pair of strikeouts around a hit batter. A key two-out play by Pearcey ended the game, as he dove after fielding a hot grounder by Colin Davis to tag the bag at second for the third out.
Gardner-Webb finished with six hits on the day, getting a 2-for-3 effort from Parkhurst with a pair of extra base hits.
Mitch McLendon (1-for-3), Pearcey (1-for-4, HR), Simone (1-for-4) and Ferguson (1-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI) also had base knocks.
Wofford also had six hits, with Hill going 4-for-5 from his two-hole spot in the order.
Terriers' ace Hayes Heinecke took the loss, despite fanning nine Runnin' Bulldogs in 5.1 innings of work. He scattered five hits and walked only two.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday in Boiling Springs. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
Isaac Campbell will take the hill for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
