
Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall in Doubleheader Opener at No. 7 Georgia, 3-2, Saturday Afternoon

ATHENS, Ga. – With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Gardner-Webb surrendered a walkoff solo home run to Georgia's Josh McAllister to fall by a 3-2 score in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Foley Field.
Gardner-Webb (1-3) trailed Georgia (5-1) by a 2-1 score as play headed to the top of the ninth inning, but immediately put the tying run on base as pinch hitter Patrick Ferguson drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Jacob Marcos moved pinch runner Benino Mendella in scoring position, setting up a RBI single to right field by Ben LaSpaluto to square the game at 2-2.
Georgia reliever Jack Gowen fanned JP McGuire and LaSpaluto was caught stealing second base to end the top half of the inning.
GWU recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, as GWU reliever Lenny Washington got Shane Marshall to fly out to center field and struck out Chaney Rogers. That brought McAllister to the plate, and with two strikes he launched a solo home run just over the left field wall to give Georgia the 3-2 decision.
Gardner-Webb scored the first run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Dom Peroni, plating Keiji Parkhurst who barreled a double to left field in the prior at-bat.
Georgia tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by Corey Collins and took the lead in the seventh on a RBI double by Luke Wagner
Gardner-Webb totaled seven base hits, paced by Pearcey (2-for-3, 2B) and Peroni (2-for-4, 2B, RBI).
Georgia totaled six base hits, led by Cole Tate (2-for-4).
Washington (0-1) took the loss on the mound for GWU, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Starter Mason Miller posted another quality start, scattering three hits in 6.0 innings of work, allowing just one earned run. Kyle Skidmore recorded two outs, allowing one run on two base hits, while Sebasten Boivin retired the one batter he faced.
