Gardner-Webb Opens Big South Play with 6-2 Win at Campbell Friday Night

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- A dominant outing by right-handed pitcher Mason Miller, combined with 11 base hits by the GWU bats lifted Gardner-Webb to a 6-2 win over Campbell in both team's Big South Conference opener on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Gardner-Webb (2-5, 1-0 Big South) plated the first run of the evening in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded base knock by Ben LaSpaluto before seizing control of the contest in the fifth inning,

With two outs, Eric Jones connected with a base hit to center field, sparking a string of four consecutive base hits.  Keiji Parkhurst followed with a double to the right field gap, plating Jones, followed by a solid base hit by Joe Simone to send Parkhurst across the plate.  That set up a triple off of the right field wall by Patrick Ferguson that scored Simone, giving Gardner-Webb a 4-0 advantage

GWU tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh.  Jones led off the frame with an infield single, followed by a two-run blast to right field by Parkhurst, his second home run of the season.

Miller cruised through the first six innings on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing no base hits with 12 strikeouts during that span.

The Camels broke through in the seventh, leading off the frame with a pair of base hits.  Campbell scored its first run of the night on a RBI groundout by Zach Williams, and followed that with a RBI knock by Matthew Christian to set the score at 6-2.  Miller recorded one more strikeout, followed by a groundout to stop the Camels run.

Gardner-Webb thwarted any comeback effort by Campbell in the final two innings, allowing just one additional base hit to seal the victory.

Parkhurst paced the GWU bats on the night, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run, and three RBI.  Jones, Ferguson, and LaSpaluto each had multi-hit evenings as well.

Campbell managed just four base hits on the night, paced by Christian (2-for-3, RBI).

Miller (2-0) lasted seven innings in the win, allowing just two earned runs on three base hits with 13 strikeouts with just two walks.  Lenny Washington faced two batters in the top of the eighth, while Kyle Skidmore recorded the final six outs of the night, allowing no runs on one base hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Ryan Chasse (2-1) took the loss for the Camels, allowing four runs on eight base hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of work.  Logan Heintzman tossed the final three frames, giving up a pair of runs on three hits while fanning two batters.

Both teams wrap up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm in Buies Creek, N.C.  Both games can be viewed live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
