BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Ben LaSpaluto launched a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 13
th inning to give Gardner-Webb a 5-4 walk-off win in midweek Big South Conference action Tuesday night at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
With a 1-2 count, LaSpaluto gave Gardner-Webb (13-13, 12-6 Big South) the win over Winthrop (9-14, 6-9 Big South) with his fourth home run of the season, past the left field fence, capping a late inning rally by the 'Dogs.
GWU trailed the Eagles by a 4-2 score with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Eric Jones sparked the rally by belting a double down the left field line, followed by a RBI double to the right field gap by
Dom Peroni to score Jones and bring the 'Dogs within one run.
Joe Simone tied the game with his fourth base hit of the night, a single to right field, but Winthrop was able to stop the run, recording the third out in the following at-bat to send the contest into extra innings.
Winthrop took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, scoring twice as an error by GWU third baseman Peroni allowed one run to cross home plate, and a RBI fielder's choice by Dillon Morton gave the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.
Winthrop jumped out to an immediate lead on a Spencer Yankle single in the top of the first inning.
Neither team scratched again until the bottom of the fourth inning when
Patrick Ferguson uncorked the first pitch he saw past the center field fence, giving Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead.
Winthrop tied the game in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Joey Tepper.
Gardner-Webb totaled nine base hits on the night, led by Simone's 4-for-4 performance with one RBI. Ferguson was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
Winthrop collected 10 hits, with Tepper (2-for-6, 2B, RBI, 2 runs) leading that effort.
Langdon Wilson (1-1) earned the win on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, hurling three scoreless frames, fanning three batters while allowing just one base hit. Starter
Luke Goodyear lasted 4.1 innings, giving up a pair of runs on five hits with one strikeout.
Dalton Skinner (2-2) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing one run on one hit with nine strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Starter Jason Crumley went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
