August 30, 2021 | Volleyball
CHARLOTTE – Following a career day to help lift the Gardner-Webb University volleyball team to a pair of wins at the Gamecock Classic, sophomore Mikah McIntosh has been named Big South Conference Libero of the Week for matches played during the opening weekend of the 2021 season, the Conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
In the team's opening three matches of the season, McIntosh totaled 60 digs, eight assists and two service aces while averaging 5.0 digs per set, the third-best mark in the conference through the first week of action.
The Libero of the Week honor for McIntosh – the first weekly award of her career – comes fresh on the heels of a record-setting performance during a thrilling five-set win over Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday. The second-year libero amassed a career-high 34 digs against the Blue Raiders, 12 more than her previous high of 22, which ties for the seventh-most digs in program history for a single match and the most since Emma Milstead posted 37 digs against Robert Morris on Aug. 26, 2016.
McIntosh also registered 20 digs, four assists and two service aces in the Runnin' Bulldogs' 3-1 win over Alabama State University. It marked the fourth time in her career that she reached at least 20 digs in a match, with half of those performances coming on Saturday, the final day of the Gamecock Classic. A day prior, she added another six digs in the season-opener against Jacksonville State University.
McIntosh becomes the first Gardner-Webb volleyball player to win a weekly Big South Player of the Week award since current teammate Kylee Garrison was named Big South Freshman of the Week in 2018. The last Runnin' Bulldog to win either Libero or Defensive Player of the Week from the league was Keira Moore in 2017.
The 'Dogs (2-1) will return to play this Sunday, September 5 at Clemson University for the program's first test against an ACC opponent since facing Georgia Tech in 2014. Action is set to get underway at 4 p.m. from Jervey Gym in Clemson, S.C.
