Gardner-Webb Announces 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame Class Friday Evening

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb University inducted its 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame class on Friday evening as part of the annual Hall of Fame Gala inside Tucker Student Center.

The event was notable, as the class was the first all-female class in the history of the Hall, which was founded in 1991. The 2022-2023 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark law that opened the door to countless educational opportunities for women across the United States.

Gardner-Webb athletics has been positively impacted, as evidenced by the 2022 Hall of Fame Class.

The class included Emily Harrelson Beachum (Cross Country/Softball), Christa Fullwood (Softball), Dominique Hudson (Basketball) and Coach Phyllis Littlefield Moore (Basketball/Volleyball).

Gardner-Webb also announced Friday that its Meritorious Service Award will be named the Chuck Burch Meritorious Service Award in honor of its recently retired Vice President for Athletics. Burch was on hand for Friday's ceremony and was named the 2022 receipient.

The inductees will also be honored during the first quarter break of Saturday's football game vs. Bryant University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm in Spanger Stadium.

Bios for the Hall of Fame inductees are below:

Emily Harrelson Beachum
Excelling in multiple sports and in the classroom, Emily Harrelson Beachum made a lasting impression on the Gardner-Webb campus in the 1990s. She was a three-time NCAA Division II Academic All-America choice, earning that honor for cross country in 1996 and both cross country and softball in 1997. Beachum was named the 1997-98 South Atlantic Conference Presidential Award Winner and was the SAC First Union Scholar-Athlete of the Year that same season in softball. Both awards signify the South Atlantic Conference's most heralded scholar-athlete. On the field, Beachum earned second-team All-SAC honors in both 1996 and 1998, helping the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 30-14 mark and second-place finish in 1996. She was a big part of the team's 1997 South Atlantic Conference title. Beachum was even better on the cross country circuit, earning first-team All-SAC honors in that sport in 1996 and 1997. Unsurprisingly, she was also named SAC First Union Scholar-Athlete of the Year in cross country for the 1997 campaign. A business and physical education double major, Beachum graduated with a strong 3.78 grade point average. She also played one season with the Gardner-Webb basketball team, seeing action in 25 games as a freshman.

Christa Fullwood
One of the top power hitters to step into the Gardner-Webb softball batter's box, Christa Fullwood was feared around the Big South Conference and beyond. She was named All-Big South Conference in both 2009 and 2010 and also earned NCCSIA All-State honors twice. Fullwood batted .460 during her 2009 campaign, the second-best mark in school history, and slugged a robust .719 with 100 total bases and 12 doubles. She followed with a .389 batting average in 2010, belting a career-best 10 home runs to go with 38 runs scored, a .675 slugging percentage and 106 total bases. Fullwood was a 2010 NFCA Mid Atlantic All-Region choice at first base following another strong season. She finished her three-year career at Gardner-Webb with a .380 batting average, 31 doubles, 20 home runs and 107 runs batted in. Fullwood continues to rank in the top-5 in Gardner-Webb history in total bases, RBI, doubles and batting average.

Dominique Hudson
One of the most exciting players to ever suit up for the Runnin' Bulldogs, guard Dominique Hudson worked her way into the starting lineup quickly and ended her career as a Gardner-Webb basketball legend. Hudson scored 1,407 career points during her time in Boiling Springs, which rates as the top mark in the program's Division I era. That total ranks fifth in program history overall. Hudson also holds top marks for the Division I era in games played (129), minutes played (3,545), free throws made (419), steals (244) and assists (579). Hudson owns the top three single-season marks in program history for assists, topping 150 helpers three times. Her 194 assists in 2010-11 set a new school record. Hudson powered Gardner-Webb to a 28-5 record as a junior, which led to a 15-1 league mark and a Big South Conference regular season title. The Runnin' Bulldogs went on to play in the WNIT that season and had a streak of 16 consecutive wins. Hudson led GWU to 23 wins the following season, a Big South Tournament championship and its first Division I Championship appearance in women's basketball. Hudson was twice named All-Big South Conference, earned Big South All-Tournament honors three times and was the Big South Tournament MVP in 2011.

Coach Phyllis Littlefield Moore
A trailblazer on Gardner-Webb's campus for women's athletics, Coach Phyllis Littlefield Moore started two senior college programs that set the stage for a wide range of opportunities for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Moore was the first coach of a Gardner-Webb women's varsity athletics program at the senior college level, founding the basketball team in 1975. She led the Runnin' Bulldogs to great heights, forging a 56-21 record and a 72.7 winning percentage over four seasons. Despite playing with a smaller roster, she directed her first team from a 1-3 start to a solid 7-7 finish. The team's first game came on November 18, 1975 against Claflin College in Bost Gymnasium. The starting five that day included Linda Cody, Pam Helton, Sherwin Johnson, Wanda Nantz and Linda Ramseur. Moore led the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first win, a 61-56 triumph, on December 5, 1975 against UNC Charlotte on that same floor. Gardner-Webb improved quickly, posting a 21-4 record in its fourth season of competition. The team advanced to the state playoffs three times and had a second-place finish in 1979. Moore also launched the Gardner-Webb volleyball program in 1978 and led her team to a winning record and berth in the state playoffs.
