Postgame Interview with Ki'Ari Cain
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb jumped out to a 20-6 lead early Saturday and sprinted to a 99-62 win over Radford for the team's fifth win in a row.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (12-13, 10-4 Big South) ran – literally – all game en route to 22 fast break points and 82 offensive possessions. GWU scored a sizzling 1.207 points per possession Saturday, finishing the game at 47.9 percent overall and 23-of-31 at the free throw line (74.2 percent).
Jhessyka Williams paced the scoring with 24 points and added nine rebounds. She made an impressive 14-of-16 from the free throw line, had three steals and a blocked shot in 29 minutes of action.
Lauren Bevis added 16 points and
Alasia Smith and
Lyrissa Deans each scored 12 points, with Smith notching another double-double with 10 rebounds. Deans blocked three shots, made 6-of-9 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds.
Ki'ari Cain added 11 points and dished off seven assists to power the Gardner-Webb offense into 90-point range for the second game in a row. GWU is averaging more than 88 points per game over its last six games.
Gardner-Webb led 24-11 after the first and built its lead to 48-26 by halftime. The squad finished the game with 19 made layups and led wire-to-wire. Freshman
Layken Cox came off the bench to score nine points and
Emma Capps added seven. Cox also had seven boards in the win.
GWU had 11 different players score in the game.
Radford (5-18, 1-11 Big South) shot just 35.5 percent and committed 22 turnovers that led to 30 Gardner-Webb points. Bridget Birkhead led the Highlanders with 21 points and Carmen Williams had 10.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting High Point in a key Big South Conference battle. Opening tip is set for 7:00 pm on ESPN+.
