Gardner-Webb's Alec Burns Named Big South Baseball Co-Player Of The Week

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb slugger Alec Burns was named Big South Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after a monster effort at the plate.

Burns (Amherst, N.H. / West Virginia) batted .517 over four games, going 8-of-14 with three home runs, 11 RBI, a pair of doubles and three walks. He forged a 1.357 slugging percentage and an eye-popping .2024 OPS (On Base Plus Slugging).

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound junior powered Gardner-Webb to a three-game sweep of Presbyterian, homering in each of the three games and driving in 10 runs for the weekend. His three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday delivered GWU its first conference series sweep of the season.

He started the week with a 2-for-3 effort at North Carolina, then had a pair of hits and four RBI in the opening win over Presbyterian. Burns followed with three hits in Saturday's win and drove in three runs on Sunday.

Burns has hit safely in eight straight games and is on an 18-game streak of reaching base safely.

For the season, the standout first baseman is batting .326 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI. He has also fielded a clean .997 with only one error in 377 chances at first base. Burns also has nine doubles, 34 runs scored and is in the midst of a season with a .448 on base percentage.

Burns and the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Western Carolina on Tuesday afternoon in their home finale at 4:00 pm (ESPN+).
