June 17, 2022 | Baseball
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb baseball has more than a dozen of its student-athletes playing in several top summer leagues in 2022 as they hone their skills before coming back to campus in August.
The Diamond 'Dogs have five men in the Coastal Plains League and several are off to strong starts. All-Big South centerfielder Jacob Marcos and pitcher Casey Young are playing for nearby Forest City, and both have been hot early for the Owls.
Marcos is batting .429 in the season's early going with a pair of RBI. Young has made two starts, going 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts.
Incoming transfers Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech) and Jacob McCaskey (California PA) are also playing in the CPL. McKernan is 1-1 with a 1.12 ERA and 15 strikeouts in just 8.0 innings of work for the Morehead City Marlins and McCaskey – a Division II All-America utility man – is batting .313 with a pair of RBI at the dish and has posted a 2.25 ERA with four strikeouts as a relief pitcher.
Bo Rusher III is playing with the Hi-Toms in High Point-Thomasville and has batted .300 with three RBI so far.
Staff ace Bobby Alcock, who missed the majority of the 2022 Gardner-Webb season, is back in top form. The Lynn, Mass, righty made his debut in the prestigious Cape Cod League on June 16, fanning a batter in 2.0 scoreless innings to pick up a win vs. Hyannis.
In the Appy League, outfielder Nate Anderson was recently named the circuit's Player of the Week as he dominated for the Kingsport Axemen. The speedy outfielder is batting .327 on the season with nine steals, seven doubles and nine RBI.
Infielders AJ Jones and AJ Solomon are playing in the same league for the Princeton Whistlepigs.
Slugger Peter Capobianco is also off to a quick start in the Prospect League, batting .313 with a pair of home runs and three RBI for the Johnstown Mill Rats in his home state.
