Gardner-Webb's Williams Earns Sixth Big South Basketball Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb standout Jhessyka Williams was named Big South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Sunday afternoon, her sixth weekly honor this season.

Williams (Augusta, Ga.) led the Big South Conference in Player of the Week selections in 2022-2023 and enters the postseason leading the league in scoring (18.8), rebounding (9.5) and double-doubles (15). She also rates among the league leaders in assists (3.2) and steals (2.0) – turning in one of the most dominant seasons in Big South and Gardner-Webb history.

The 5-foot-10 standout is a bonafide All-America candidate and the front runner for Big South Conference Player of the Year.

This past week she led Gardner-Webb to a pair of wins, averaging 24.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 blocked shots and 1.5 steals per game. Williams shot an even 50.0 percent from the field (16-of-32) and powered the Runnin' Bulldogs to 86.0 points per game in those two wins.

She scored 21 points, had five assists and seven rebounds in an 89-72 road win at Longwood Wednesday and followed with a season-high 28 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks in an 83-59 win over USC Upstate on her Senior Day.

Saturday's win was even more notable, as Williams and her teammates capped an 18-0 regular season in Big South play – the first time ever than any basketball team had won 18 league games.

Williams enters this week's Hercules Tires Big South Conference Championships in Charlotte with 1,940 career points – which leaves her within striking distance of becoming just the third woman in Gardner-Webb basketball history to reach the 2,000-point mark.

Only Hall of Famers Fredia Lawrence (1988-1992) and Dina Smith (1981-1985) have accomplished that feat so far, with Lawrence scoring 2,201 points and Smith netting 2,031 points during their time with the Runnin' Bulldogs. Lawrence, who also has more than 1,000 career rebounds, is the lone woman in program history to have her jersey (No. 21) retired.

Her production over the past two years has been terrific, recording more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in those two seasons alone.

Williams passed Hall of Fame Carolyn Dewberry (1978-1982) for third on the all-time scoring list on Saturday and is the top scorer in the program's Division I era (since 2000) by more than 500 points. Williams is third in the program's Division I era with 949 career rebounds.

Gardner-Webb begins its quest for an NCAA berth and the Big South Championship trophy on Thursday at 11:00 at Bojangles Coliseum (ESPN+ / ESPNCLT.com).
