May 22, 2023 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb standouts Bobby Alcock and Mark Black each won Big South Conference Baseball Weekly honors on Monday to close the regular season.
Alcock (Lynn, Mass.) was named Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week and Black (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was named Big South Co-Player of the Week following their performances – which helped Gardner-Webb to a 3-1 mark over four games.
Alcock was terrific once again against Charleston Southern, tossing 7.0 shutout innings and allowing just two hits in a 1-0 win over the Buccaneers. The big righty fanned five and did not allow an extra base hit.
It was the latest in a spectacular season for the redshirt sophomore, who has emerged as the frontrunner for Big South Pitcher of the Year honors. Alcock is now 7-2 on the season and leads the Big South in ERA (2.20), strikeouts (99) and opponents batting average (.170). He was even better in league games, winning five times and pacing the circuit with 10.89 strikeouts per nine innings and innings pitched (60.1).
Alcock also held a league-best 1.79 ERA with a .155 batting average against against Big South foes. He will take the mound again on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 pm against top-seeded Campbell at the 2023 Big South Conference Baseball Championship in High Point.
Black was clutch for the Runnin' Bulldogs in four starts last week, batting .421 with three home runs and 10 RBI. He went 8-for-19 at the plate, scored five runs and posted an .895 slugging percentage.
He slugged even better over the weekend vs. Charleston Southern, as he had 15 total bases for a 1.071 slugging percentage.
In Gardner-Webb's midweek win at No. 16 Duke, Black went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base. He followed with a 1-for-4 effort in Thursday's 1-0 win over Charleston Southern, then broke out the big bat on Friday. Black was 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI – including his first grand slam of the year – to help the Runnin' Bulldogs open up a commanding 15-3 lead that would hold.
Black added a solo home run as part of a 2-for-5 effort in Saturday's regular season finale.
The do-it-all talent is batting .279 so far this season with seven home runs, six doubles and 32 runs batted in. He has scored 41 runs and has forged a .391 on base percentage in 46 starts at catcher, designated hitter, third base, second base and in left field.
Gardner-Webb (31-23) finished the 2023 regular season tied for third in the final Big South Conference standings and earned the No. 4 seed in the four-team Big South Conference Baseball Championship this week.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will face top-seed Campbell at 1:00 pm on Thursday at Truist Point in High Point, N.C. (ESPN+).
