BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the first time since becoming a Division I institution, the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team has posted back-to-back double-digit win season following a 2-1 defeat of Wofford on Tuesday, October 7.
"We have set an incredible standard of winning and that means the world to me," said head coach Scott Wells. "I think back to what got us here and how we believed the impossible was possible, that's exactly what we have to believe now going into this final stretch."
Over the past two seasons, the Runnin' Bulldogs have compiled an overall record of 23-5-4 while garnering a 9-0-2 record in conference play.
The 2024 team took the program to new heights after winning the team's first ever Big South Tournament Championship, a thrilling 2-1 win at conference rival and No. 22 High Point. Gardner-Webb also snapped HPU's long conference win streak two weeks prior.
Not finished, the Dawgs went on to draw nationally ranked Oregon State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and following a late goal by
Caio Hughes, picked up the team's first regular time win during postseason play.
Gardner-Webb has carried the momentum into the 2025 season, blistering the schedule with the team's best start at 10-1-1. Of those wins, the biggest coming at No. 6 West Virginia, where the Runnin' Bulldogs went into Morgantown and snapped the Mountaineers 32-match home win streak that dated back to the 2021 season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have also started conference play with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring opponents 8-0 in league action. While offense has been consistent for the Dawgs, defense has built a solid foundation over the course of the season with GWU collecting eight clean sheets.
Gardner-Webb has four games remaining on its 2025 schedule and with wins could break the single-season wins record set by last year's squad.
The Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Radford, Va. to take on the Highlanders of Radford on Saturday, October 11. Kickoff for that contest is slated for 2 p.m.
