ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb (14-16, 4-6) baseball team exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits to defeat the UNC Asheville (14-16, 2-5), 13-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field in Big South action.
UNC Asheville struck first with a run in the opening inning, but the Runnin' Bulldogs quickly responded in the second. After Kelvin Agosto reached base, Ryan Kennell launched a two-run home run to right field to give Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead.
The offense continued to roll in the third inning. Merik Carter reached base and Matt Ilgenfritz followed with a single before Kennell delivered again, driving in two runs with a single to push the advantage to 4-1.
Gardner-Webb created separation in the fourth inning with another offensive burst. Zack Thompson worked a walk and later scored when Allan Camarillo ripped an RBI triple. Carter followed with a towering two-run home run to right field, extending the Runnin' Bulldogs' lead to 7-3.
Kennell led off the fifth with a single and eventually scored on an RBI single from Thompson to make it 8-3. Gardner-Webb added two more runs in the seventh when Carter doubled down the right-field line to bring home Camarillo, and Ilgenfritz followed with an RBI double.
Gardner-Webb tacked on three additional runs over the final two innings, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Thompson in the eighth and a pair of ninth inning runs driven in by Kelvin Agosto and Joe Stanzione.
Kennell paced the offense with a four-hit performance, finishing 4-for-6 with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Carter reached base five times, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, three RBIs and four runs scored.
Ilgenfritz added three hits, while Camarillo finished with two hits including a triple and scored twice.
Oliver Ellison delivered a strong start for Gardner-Webb, earning the win after tossing eight innings. The right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) while striking out three. Brendan Lysik and Colby Humphries combined to close out the ninth inning to secure the victory.
The series will continue tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
