CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman starting pitcher Matt Stuart of the Gardner-Webb baseball team has been tabbed Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week following a dominating performance against UNC Asheville on Friday, April 3. This is Stuart's first honor of the season.
Stuart tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking one in Gardner-Webb's win at UNC Asheville on Friday. He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, retiring the first 17 batters before allowing a baserunner. The only two hits he surrendered were singles in the sixth and ninth innings, with his lone walk coming in the seventh. The freshman right-hander held opposing hitters to a .069 batting average.
