GWU Volleyball Assistant Coach Carrie Gurnell Earns AVCA Diversity Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Gardner-Webb volleyball assistant coach Carrie Gurnell has been named one of ten recipients of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Diversity Awards.
The AVCA Diversity Awards provide ten recipients complimentary registration to the AVCA convention and five nights of lodging. The awards are part of the organization's diversity initiatives and minority coach development, and will gain the recipients access to an agenda of coaching education programming, mentoring and networking functions targeted at them during the convention.
"2017 brought the deepest pool of talented aspiring coaches in the history of the award," stated AVCA Diversity Development Team Chair and Butler University head coach Sharon Clark. "The Diversity Team had a tough task during the selection process with so many worthy candidates. We are thrilled with this year's awardees and look forward to them experiencing an informative and invigorating convention."
Gurnell is in her second season as assistant coach at Gardner-Webb, where she assists in all aspects of the program.
The Katy, Texas native brings a wealth of experience to the GWU program, having coached eight years at the junior club level and two years coaching young children in Austria, where she played professionally for three seasons for Volleyball Club Tirol in Innsbruck, Austria.
Gurnell was also a standout collegiately at Purdue University from 2006 to 2009, where she totaled more than 1,000 kills for her career as an outside hitter.
