'Dogs Win First Regular Season Contest, Defeat Wofford, 67-53

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs took the lead from the Wofford Terriers less than two minutes into the first quarter and never looked back, cruising to 67-53 win in the regular season home opener.

Wofford (0-3 overall) scored the first bucket of the game, but the 'Dogs tied things at two and then took the lead on Ki'Ari Cain's jumper 1:38 into the period. From there, Gardner-Webb never relinquished the lead, and extended it to five by the end of the first quarter thanks to Jhessyka Williams' layup with 1:23 remaining.

Gardner-Webb (1-1) secured its first double-digit lead, 25-15, when Lauren Bevis knocked down a triple with 4:29 remaining until the half.

The Terriers ended the first half on a 7-2 run that was capped off by three free throws by Chole Wanink, which made it a five point contest, 27-22, after the first half.

Gabrielle Caponegro quickly pushed the 'Dogs' lead back to 10, scoring the first five points of the third period in just 2:05. Wofford got as close as four, but off Cairo Booker's layup with 4:06 to go in the period, but the Runnin' Bulldogs took a 12-point lead , 45-33, by the end of the quarter thanks in part by five points by Bevis.

Gardner-Webb's largest lead of the contest was 15 and came in the final quarter. The 'Dogs led by 15 on five separate occasions, responding each time that the Terriers cut the home team's advantage to single digits.

Bevis ended the game with another five-point run of her own with all five coming at the free throw line in just 39 seconds.

Gardner-Webb's 67-53 win avenges a six-point road loss to Wofford last season and is the Runnin' Bulldogs' 10th win over the Terriers since Gardner-Webb joined the NCAA Division I ranks.

Wofford's Wanink scored a game-high 23 points with nine of her 23 coming at the charity stripe. She was held to just 6-of-17 shooting and made a mere 2-of-10 three-point attempts. Lilly Hatton contributed six points and led the visitors with nine rebounds. 

Bevis scored a team-best 18 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs and made 90 percent (9-of-10) of her attempts from the charity stripe while shooting an efficient 3-of-7 from the floor. Caponegro was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes. Cain was finished one-point away from double-digits with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.

The Runnin' Bulldogs scored on 39.1 percent of their possessions, while the Terriers converted just 29.1 percent of the time. The major difference came on the glass as Gardner-Webb collected 48 boards compared to Wofford's 35.

Gardner-Webb will look to secure their second win of the young season next Friday, November 22 when the travel to Appalachian State for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
