BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Head women's soccer coach
Mike Varga announced the addition of six signees on Wednesday. Three will be joining in the spring and three will join in the fall.
Marina Bradic, Tijana Josic and Grace Clark will join the Runnin' Bulldogs for competition in the spring 2021 season. Lea Gossett, Livi Tanzer and Klara Ovefelt will join the team in the fall for the start of the traditional 2021 season.
Marina Bradic (Medvedja, Serbia) will join the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team this spring as a junior transfer from East Tennessee State. Playing as a defender for ETSU for two seasons, Bradic had 20 starts and appeared in 25 games. During the 2019 season Bradic helped the Bucs to a 1.15 GAA with four shutouts, while also being named to the 2019 Fall Academic All-Conference Team. Prior to ETSU, in Serbia Bradic played for the Serbian U19 National team and ZFK Spartak Subotica. While with Subotica, Bradic gained valuable experience when her team took part in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
Varga on Bradic: "Marina brings a wealth of experience both internationally and at the NCAA Division I level to our program. She is a leader on the field with her tactical knowledge of the game will be an incredible addition to our roster for the spring season and beyond."
Tijana Josic (Krusevac, Serbia/Economic High School) joins the Runnin' Bulldogs as a transfer from East Tennessee State University after just one season. At ETSU Josic did not see any playing time, as she spent the 2019 season recovering from a torn ACL. Prior to ETSU, Josic represented Serbia as part of her nations u17 youth national team. She also competed in the UEFA Women's U-19 Qualifiers as a member of ŽFK Napredak Kruševac.
Varga on Josic: "Tijana is an extremely versatile player that also has experience at the highest level in Europe. Tijana is completely recovered from the unfortunate injury that sidelined her during her freshman year and is ready to make an immediate impact this spring."
Grace Clark (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Oakland High School) joins the Webb from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where she attended Oakland High School. Clark excelled the classroom with 3.8 GPA and as a member of the National Honor Society.
During her time at Oakland High School, Clark lettered in varsity soccer all four years under head coach Jeff Porter playing as a center back/midfielder. Over her four years Clark was named to second team all-conference, won districts, and the sub-state two times. Her teams also made two state championship appearances. Clark also plays for the Tennessee Soccer Club, helping the club to win a Mid-South Regional championship. Clark also was a member of the Tennessee State ODP team and was named to the South Region ODP Pool.
Varga on Clark: "Grace is one of the hardest working young ladies that I know. She is constantly doing more than what is expected and is as driven as they come. She comes from a family of successful collegiate coaches so she has insight that others don't. Grace is technical enough to solve problems with the ball in tight space. She is also athletic enough and quick enough with the ball to find success in space."
Lea Gossett (Bailey, N.C./Wilson Christian Academy) will join Gardner-Webb Women's Soccer from Bailey, N.C., where she attended Wilson Christian Academy. On the soccer pitch, Gossett played under head coach Don Sampson as a center back. During her time with the program, Gossett helped the team win a state championship title, and earned All-State Honors twice. Gossett also plays for Elite NCFC. Lea was a member of the North Carolina Olympic Development program and was named to the state team that competed at regional camp in Montevallo, Alabama.
Varga on Gossett: "Lea is a competitor. She is strong on the ball and has the ability to play multiple positions. She has the technical ability and strength to play centrally in the midfield. She can play as a center back and has all the traits to be successful at that position at the college level. She also has the ability to score goals and hold the ball as a center forward."
Olivia Tanzer (Eads, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) will join the Runnin' Bulldogs from Eads, Tennessee where she attended St. George's Independent School. In the classroom at St. George's, Tanzer boasts an impressive 4.67 GPA, where she is also a member of the Junior National Honor Society, National Honors Society, and the National Science Honors Society.
Under head coach Tony Whicker, Tanzer played as a forward helping take home the state title in 2017, and regional titles in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Tanzer also plays for the Lady Lobos Rush Club team, helping her team to win three championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Varga on Tanzer: "Livi fits nicely into our system. She has the ability as a center forward to hold the ball in traffic and is an incredibly strong player. She has a knack of finding the back of the net and she helps make her teammates better."
Klara Ovefelt (Stockholm, Sweden/Anna Whitlocks Gymnasium) will join the Runnin' Bulldogs all the way from Sweden, where she attended Anna Whitlocks Gymnasium. Ovefelt plays in the central midfielder position on the Senior team at Älvsjö AIK, where they compete in the Swedish Elitettan – 2nd National Tier in Sweden.
Varga on Ovefelt: "Klara's experience playing in the Elitettan will prepare her for immediate success at the collegiate level. She is confident on the ball and is excellent in finding pockets on the field to help in possession and can also stretch the game with her passing accuracy over distance. Klara will make an immediate impact in our already talented midfield and I look forward to having her join us in August."
