Ninth Inning Heroics Lift Runnin’ Bulldogs Past High Point, 6-3, Friday Night

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Gardner-Webb scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to go on to a 6-3 win over High Point in Friday's Big South series opener.
 
With the score tied at 3-3 as play headed to the final inning, Gardner-Webb (5-9, 4-4 Big South) led off the frame with a double by Benino Mendella, who was quickly moved into scoring position after an infield single by JP McGuire.
 
Mitch McLendon gave the 'Dogs the lead with a double to left field that sent Mendella across the plate, his second RBI double of the day.
 
GWU added two more runs in the top of the ninth, scoring once one a wild pitch by High Point (8-10, 6-6 Big South) pitcher Carter Sheppard that allowed McGuire to score, and later Bo Rusher reached on a RBI fielder's choice that plated McLendon.
 
Gardner-Webb reliever Kyle Skidmore kept the Panthers off the board in the bottom half of the ninth to seal the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
 
High Point jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch by GWU starter Mason Miller.
 
GWU answered in the top of the second inning as Dom Peroni belted his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to knot the score at 1-1.
 
Gardner-Webb claimed its first lead of the day in the third inning as McLendon snuck a double down the left field line, scooting Mendella across home plate, who led the inning off with an infield single.
 
High Point tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by Justin Ebert.
 
GWU reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth on a RBI knock by Eric Jones, yet High Point squared the bout once again at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single by Adam Stuart.
 
Gardner-Webb totaled nine base hits on the night, with McLendon (2-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Peroni (2-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI) and McGuire (2-for-3) pacing the 'Dogs.
 
The Panthers collected seven hits on the evening, with Cole Singsank (3-for-4) leading the way.  All seven hits by HPU were singles.
 
Skidmore (1-0) earned the win on the mound for GWU, tossing the final two scoreless frames, scattering two base hits with one strikeout.  Miller lasted seven innings in the start, allowing two earned runs on five hits while fanning five batters.
 
Sheppard (0-3) took the loss for High Point, allowing three runs on three base hits in 1.2 innings of work.  Starter Dawson Place lasted 4.2 innings, giving up a pair of runs on three base hits with six strikeouts.
 
The series resumes tomorrow at 1:00 pm with a doubleheader at Willard Stadium.  Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
