GWU Wraps Up Regular Season With Series Win Against Radford

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.  – Gardner-Webb wrapped up the 2021 regular season Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with visiting Radford at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (28-21, 27-13 Big South) claimed the weekend series over Radford (23-23, 17-19 Big South) by taking the first game of Saturday's twin bill, 7-5.  The Highlanders took the nightcap by an 8-4 score.

GAME ONE

Gardner-Webb scored all seven runs in the middle innings to take a 7-5 decision over Radford in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Trailing the Highlanders by a 1-0 score as play headed to the bottom of the fourth, Gardner-Webb put two runs on quickly as Eric Jones reached via a walk, followed by a base hit by Patrick Ferguson.  That set up a bases-clearing triple to the right field gap for Keiji Parkhurst to give Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead.

The Runnin' Bulldogs expanded their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring once on a RBI knock by Eric Jones and twice more on a base hit by Parkhurst to set the score at 5-1.

Radford pulled within two runs in the top of the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Dac Archer and a base hit by Connor Bagnieski.

GWU answered in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back solo home runs by Benino Mendella and Bo Rusher.  It was the second home run of the season for both batters.

Radford attempted to rally in the top of the ninth, with Sean Cheely scoring on a wild pitch, followed by a RBI single by Will Harless to bring the Highlanders within two runs at 7-5, but GWU reliever Connor Gleeson was able to halt the comeback effort by getting Archer to ground out to end the game.

GWU totaled 11 hits throughout the contest, led by a 3-for-4 effort by Parkhurst with a double, a triple, and four RBI.

Kyle Skidmore (5-1) earned the win on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing no runs on four base hits with two strikeouts.  Starter Bobby Alcock lasted 4.1 innings giving up one run on two hits with four strikeouts.  Langdon Wilson recorded two outs in the fifth, giving up two runs with two strikeouts.  Gleeson worked the ninth, allowing a pair of runs on two base hits.

Radford had eight base hits, with David Bryant, Harless, and Bagnieski each going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Greg Duncan (6-3) took the loss for the Highlanders, giving up seven runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work in the start.

GAME TWO

A four-run first inning propelled Radford to an 8-4 decision in the back end of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Highlanders took control immediately, scoring twice on back-to-back doubles by Sean Cheely and David Bryant with no outs.  Later in the frame with two outs, one run scored on a double by Anthony Galati and a wild pitch by Matt Rivers allowed Will Harless to cross home plate.

Neither team scratched again until the bottom of the fifth when Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard on a RBI double to right field by Keiji Parkhurst that plated Eric Jones, who reached on a double to the right field gap.

Radford scored twice more in the sixth on a two-run home run by Grant Matheny.  The Highlanders also added single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Gardner-Webb scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, highlighted by a solo home run in the seventh by Patrick Ferguson, his 13th home run of the season, and a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth by Parkhurst, his team-best 14th of the year.

The home run completed the cycle for the day for Parkhurst, who combined for a 5-for-9 day at the plate with one single, two doubles, one triple, and one home run and five RBI.
