
Gardner-Webb Baseball Falls In Saturday Afternoon Slugfest At Georgia Tech

The Runnin' Bulldogs (27-15) had 13 hits and scored multiple runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Georgia Tech (25-18) jumped on top with a six-run first inning and scored runs in all but one inning.
Gardner-Webb rallied after the Yellow Jackets' initial burst, cutting the lead in half in the top of the third. Red-hot Curtis Robison led off with a walk and Trevor Mattson followed suit after a Nate Anderson fielder's choice to put two men on.
Bo Rusher III connected on a single to load the bases and Peter Capobianco roped a two-run double into right to make the score 6-2. Capobianco later scored on a wild pitch for a 6-3 score.
Georgia Tech answered in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run from Jackson Finley to push its lead to 9-3, but Gardner-Webb had more in the tank.
The Runnin' Bulldogs loaded the bases quickly in the top of the fourth, with Max Smyley leading off and reaching on an error. Jacob Marcos was plunked and Robison singled into left.
Mattson walked in a run on five pitches and Bo Rusher III drove in another with a ground out. Nate Anderson scored on a wild pitch and Capobianco drove home a run with an RBI single to trim Georgia Tech's lead to 9-7.
Georgia Tech countered again, scoring four in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the fifth to build an 18-7 lead.
Mattson led off the sixth with a solo home run to left and Capobianco was hit by a pitch with one away. Humberto Torres drew a walk and Max Smyley came through with a two-run double down the right field line to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to 18-10. Marcos followed with an RBI single into center for Gardner-Webb's 11th run.
Georgia Tech plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh to bring the game to a close.
Jacob McCaskey (1-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on one hit in the first inning. Gardner-Webb used seven different arms on Saturday.
Robison raised his season average to .380 with a 3-for-4 day at the plate to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs. Marcos (2-for-4), Rusher (2-for-4), Capobianco (2-for-3), Torres (2-for-4) each had two of Gardner-Webb's 13 hits.
Georgia Tech had 22 hits in the game, with five different batters collecting three each. Finley was 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI in the game.
Dawson Brown (3-2) came in to earn the win in relief, working 2.1 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm (ACC Network Xtra / WatchESPN.com).
