Runnin’ Bulldogs take game one and the weekend series prior to dropping game two with Terriers

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb baseball team split their series ending doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against Wofford College taking game one in extra innings 6-5, and dropping game two 8-4 in a previously scheduled seven inning game.

Wofford took a 2-0 lead in the second inning then upped it to 4-0 in the fifth. The Runnin' Bulldogs began to chip into the lead in the bottom frame as Joe Stanzione homered to left center scoring two. Peter Capobianco hit another homer in the sixth to make it a 4-3 ballgame. The Terriers were able to single in the seventh making it 5-3. Stanzione with his second two-run of the day brought home Lawson Knight as well tying the game 5-5. The 'Dawgs and Terriers battled all the way into the 10^th inning when Lawson scored from third on a fielding error by the pitcher winning the game 6-5 on a walk off. Devin Pressley got the win, and Alec Bouchard the loss.

Alec Burns got GWU on the board first in game two hitting a solo shot in the third. The Terriers put up two in the fourth before Gavin Johnson doubled to tie back up 2-2. Gardner-Webb then took a two-run lead in the fifth on a Nick Capozzi single, and walked in run thanks to Ethan Liao. Wofford went on to tie the game with two home runs in the sixth prior to putting up a four spot in the top of the seventh inning taking the ballgame 8-4. Mason Compton got the win, and Creighton Hansen the loss.

Gardner-Webb will return to the field on Tuesday, May 7 at Western Carolina University starting at 5:00 p.m.
